Rendered walls vary significantly across Herefordshire — the right preparation and product depends on render type, surface condition, and property age.
Smooth and Fine-Textured Render
The most common render job is a colour refresh on a smooth or lightly textured rendered exterior. We pressure wash the surface, treat any green algae, fill hairline cracks, apply a masonry primer to bare or repaired areas, and apply one or two coats of exterior masonry paint.
Smooth render takes a roller and brush application cleanly. Where the rendered surface is in good condition and well-adhered, a well-executed repaint will hold for eight to twelve years before needing attention again.
Hairline Cracks and Surface Repairs
Rendered walls develop hairline cracks over time as the render moves with seasonal temperature change. Fine cracks up to 2–3mm wide are straightforward to fill with exterior flexible filler before painting.
We fill and prime all hairline cracks as part of preparation. Painting over unfilled cracks allows water into the render behind the new coat, which then freezes and expands in cold weather and accelerates deterioration.
Lime Render on Period Properties
Older stone and brick properties across Herefordshire — cottages in Credenhill, farmhouse conversions near Lugwardine, period properties in Ross-on-Wye and Ledbury — are often finished with lime render or have lime render beneath a later sand-cement coat.
Lime render is a breathable material designed to let moisture move in and out of the wall. Modern impermeable masonry paint traps moisture behind the coating, causing blistering and accelerated deterioration. We use breathable masonry paints on lime render — this is a critical distinction for period property owners.
K-Rend and Polymer Render Systems
K-Rend and similar polymer thin-coat render systems are common on properties built or extensively refurbished from the late 1990s onwards. Newer phases of Belmont or properties in the Holmer Road corridor frequently have these systems.
Where K-Rend has faded, stained, or cracked, painting is an option. The surface requires a compatible masonry paint — not all products bond well to polymer render. We advise on product compatibility before starting and test adhesion on a small area if there is any doubt.
Biological Growth Treatment
Algae, Moss, and Lichen on Rendered Walls
Green, black, and orange staining on rendered walls is caused by algae, moss, and lichen. It is common on north-facing elevations and in sheltered positions where the wall stays damp for extended periods.
Herefordshire’s climate, with reliable rainfall and mild winters, creates good conditions for biological growth on rendered exteriors. Properties facing north along Whitecross Road or in the wooded hillside villages around Ledbury are particularly prone to this growth.
Treatment Before Painting
Pressure washing removes surface growth, but painting over untreated render allows regrowth to push through the new coat within a season. We apply a mould treatment after washing and before painting — this kills biological growth at root level and significantly extends the life of the repaint.
