Pebbledash requires a different approach from smooth render or standard masonry — the heavily textured surface demands specific equipment and more material per square metre.
How Pebbledash is Painted
Pebbledash is a heavily textured exterior finish — small stones embedded into a wet render coat. A standard roller cannot reach into the crevices between pebbles, leaving bare patches across the surface.
We use a long-pile masonry roller and work paint in by brush where needed. For larger properties, airless spray application can cover the surface faster, but it requires careful masking to protect windows, doors, and adjacent brickwork. Pebbledash also absorbs more paint per square metre than smooth render — this is always accounted for in the quote.
Preparation and Surface Treatment
We treat north-facing pebbledash walls in Hereford’s wetter climate as a priority. We start with a thorough pressure wash to clear dirt, dust, and biological growth sitting in the pebble crevices.
Where moss or green algae is present, we apply a mould treatment before painting. This kills the growth at the root. Painting over untreated growth causes the green to bleed through a new coat within a season.
