Timber Fence Panels
Timber fence panels range from lapped panels to close-board fencing. Each type has different coverage requirements and product absorption characteristics.
We clean panels before treatment to remove algae, lichen, and weathered material. A fence painted without cleaning lasts a fraction of the time.
Close-Board Fencing
Close-board fencing is the most durable timber fence type. Individual boards nailed to arris rails allow some movement and last longer than panel fences in exposed positions.
Penetrating stain suits individual boards better than film-forming paint — it allows the timber to breathe and fails by fading rather than peeling.
Garden Gates
Garden gates take more physical wear than static fence panels. Hinges, catches, and the bottom edge of the gate are the most vulnerable points — we pay additional attention to these areas during preparation and sealing.
We assess gate post condition at the same visit. Post bases at ground level are a common failure point in older timber boundary structures.
Fence Staining
Staining is the preferred approach for most timber fences. Penetrating stains enter the timber surface, while film-forming paints tend to peel rather than fade.
We advise on the right product for each fence — the choice depends on timber type, existing condition, and preference.
Protective Coatings
Herefordshire’s damp autumn and winter climate accelerates timber deterioration. A regular treatment programme every two to three years maintains condition and extends the fence life significantly.
For shed painting and outbuilding treatment at the same property, we can combine both jobs in a single visit.

For exterior walls and masonry alongside the fence, see our exterior painting page. For deck treatment at the same property, see our deck painting page.
How Our Fence Painting Works
1. Fence Assessment
We inspect all fence panels, posts, and gates. We note surface condition, existing treatment, any structural deterioration, and areas needing repair before treatment begins.
2. Cleaning
We clean the fence with an appropriate wash to remove algae, lichen, and weathered surface residue. The fence is allowed to dry fully before treatment begins.
3. Preparation
Any loose or flaking existing treatment is removed. Structural repairs to damaged boards or posts are noted and quoted separately where needed.
4. Treatment Application
We apply the agreed stain or protective coating with brush, roller, or sprayer as appropriate. Two coats are standard where the timber is in good condition.
5. Final Check
We inspect coverage across all fence surfaces before leaving. Any missed areas or thin patches are corrected the same day.

Fence Painting Costs in Hereford
Prices below are estimates only. Every fence is different. Call 01432 805377 for a precise quote.

Fence Length and Panel Count
A standard Belmont estate property with 10 panels costs less than a longer boundary fence at a Holmer detached. Total fence area determines materials and application time.
Typical range: £280 to £450 for a standard 10-panel run, £420 to £650 for a longer detached property fence.
Surface Condition
Fences with significant algae, lichen, or previous treatment failure require more cleaning and preparation time. Heavily weathered panels absorb more product and need additional coats.
Trade insight: older softwood panels on Belmont estate properties from the 1970s to 1980s have open, weathered grain that benefits from a cleaning and stabilising prime coat before the main treatment.
Fence Type
Panel fencing is quicker to treat per metre than close-board fencing. Close-board fencing has more individual surfaces and takes longer per panel run.
Adding a garden gate to the same job typically costs an additional £80 to £150. We cover wood painting for all exterior timber at the same property.
